Luisetti Seeds Division 1
West Melton has the toughest task in the Luisetti Seeds Division 1 quarter-finals this weekend: trying to stop the rampant and undefeated Lincoln side.
The much-improved gold and blues did not have the best preparation in section 1 last weekend, being beaten 39-31 by Celtic after upsetting Methven the previous week. Coach Nick Dierck says his side will however be ready for their quarter-final.
“We know we can match it with these top sides - beating Methven certainly proved that. Yet we know that to stand a chance this weekend we will need to be much better than what we were last weekend.”
It has been a season to savour for West Melton regardless of what happens this weekend. Fourth place in section 1 is nothing to be sneezed at. Nick says his side has improved during the year with Methven by far its best performance to date.
“Our forward pack has been particularly impressive,” he explains. “Loose forwards Sam Dickson (the captain) and Peter Stevens have been particularly outstanding, while front-rowers Rob Ferguson, Rob Taylor and Blair Agnew have starred.”
“We have gone from a team that played together to a team that plays for each other,” Nick says. “We have really grown.”
Part of the reason for this camaraderie has been that the side is made up mainly of ‘friends of friends’. “The squad all gets along and that makes things so much easier,” Nick says.
A young side (the average age would be around 20), this is the third season that West Melton has participated in the combined competition. Their rise has been impressive and given heart to a club that was once one of the strongest in Ellesmere.
“Like a lot of clubs we are missing guys from the 22-27 age bracket. We need to somehow get them back involved in rugby.” Nick hopes his side can stay together. “You only grow as a squad if you have continuity. We have shown that.”
Nick says he knows Lincoln will be tough. “Still, if we are going to do well in this competition we probably had to come across them at some stage. We will give it our best shot.”
In the three other quarter-finals, Southbridge will play Southern, Methven will take on Ashley, while Darfield will play Oxford. While Lincoln remains favoured, don’t rule out West Melton. If they can beat Methven they can beat anyone.
