Luisetti Seeds Combined Division 1 Final – Lincoln Champions for 2014
Lincoln’s nail biting victory over Waihora in the Final of the Luisetti Seeds Division 1 competition can be best summed up by their co-coach Greg Lewis. “Rugby is a funny game – but at the end of the day, we will take the win.”
Having found his side up early thanks to a try from backrower Darryl Lambourne, it looked as though the final would be anything but close, when really everyone should have known better. It did not take the home side long to score some points on the Tai Tapu soil, with fullback and captain Mark Maitland getting over the line.
With a 12-5 advantage at halftime the outcome was in doubt for the remainder of the match. With less than 10 minutes to play, Waihora had several chances to repeatlast year’s heroics when they scored a last-gasp try. But this time around with a shot to win the game, Maitland was unable to convert.
When asked to describe the last 10 minutes of the game, Lewis said it was an uneasy experience. “Unfortunately it wasn’t as in-control as we would have liked. You don’t like to be on the back end of potentially having points scored against you when you can’t do much about it.”
Lincoln’s captain Mike Bendall said it had been a hard few years for his side, and he was worried he was about to see yet another final slip away. “Losing three out of four finals would have hurt so much.” The Captain said he was “so proud” of the team for their effort throughout the competition. “We were built really well this season and we had the hard road playing Southbridge and Rakaia along the way.”
Lewis said his side’s forward pack was key to their victory. “Our pack has performed well all year and I think to Waihora’s credit they stayed in there and competed as well, and arguably got a bit better in the second half.
Lewis’ brother Brent – who co-coaches Waihora – congratulated his brother after the final whistle and said Lincoln was “a very hard side to knock over.”
