Metro Club Season Launch
Metro Rugby launched its season with a well-attended function at the Cotswald Hotel, the morning of Saturday 4th April.Such launches have become part and parcel of the Metro season and have become a great way for club personnel and those involved in the game to meet, share information and rejoice in the spirit of rugby.
This year's launch was no different and there was quite a buzz about the gathering due to the fact that the entire competition was kicking off later that afternoon.
The function was made even more special as recently retired Canterbury Rugby administrator Warren Barberel and his wife Dawn were special guests. Warren has of course been one of the great stalwarts of the game in the province and his service was appropriately marked.
Warren said recently that he was humbled by the accolade and that serving rugby people in Metro and the wider rugby community in Canterbury had been more a passion than a job and something that he would miss.
Also at the function, Merivale’s Vic Mathieson was awarded the Ian Penrose Volunteer Award for his services to his club, services spanning more than 50 years.
Metro chairman Murray Withers says that the launch was a great way for Metro to get together and kick the season off in style. “Over the years the clubs have really enjoyed it and it has given them the opportunity to have a bit of friendly banter about the season ahead.”
