Hornby Under 8's - A Team on the Rise

17 Jun 2010

Hornby U8sThe Hornby Under-8s is a team in the truest sense of the word. Although they lost their first match of the season to the Christchurch Under-8s last weekend, they remain a special team with a unique bond between the players.

It all started back in 2007 when half the team started playing rugby as mad-keen three-year-olds. They were playing in the Under-6 competition (Section 2) in those days, enjoying their rugby and making bonds that would stand them in good stead in the seasons to come.

The next season the team’s growth and improvement was obvious. They played in the Under-6 grade again (Section 1 this time) as four-year-olds and did remarkably well to win half their games.

Their improvement continued last season when they went through the Under-6 grade (Section 1) unbeaten, and were never seriously tested. As a result of their achievements, a decision was made at the end of 2009 to skip the Under-7 grade and go straight to the Under-8s with the intention of playing in the bottom section.

Now five and six-year-olds, the Hornby lads won all their grading games at the start of the season and were somewhat surprised to be placed in Section 1.

Up until last weekend the boys had won all five of their games and two in their rank - Caleb Margetts and Kobe Kay – had scored over 100 points for the team.

On Saturday they were up against boys who were much older in relative terms and although they went down, they still scored four tries to be gallant in defeat.

Supporters of the team say that the reasons for their success are the commitment of the boys and the dedication of their coach Brent Margetts. All but two of the players will be eligible to play in the Under-8 grade next season, suggesting more victories ahead.
