Sam Godwin (University) Hawkins Medal Player of The Week (Round 6)

10 May 2015

Sam GodwinA change of mindset and doing the hard yards is bearing fruit for University and their captain Sam Godwin.

The students have only lost one game so far in Canterbury rugby’s metro Division One and Godwin is leading the Hawkins Medal standings for the most valuable player.

Every week independent observers award three, two and one points respectively to the best three players at each match in the race for the Hawkins Medal.

“It really started at the end of last year, when we decided that we were going to do things differently after a very disappointing season,” says Godwin.

He says that University is already close to its original goal of a top-six finish, with virtually the same squad as last season, thanks to this more focused approach and a better preparation. “So we may need to have another look at that and aim even higher,”says Godwin.

The 20-year-old engineering student came down to Christchurch from the Hawkes Bay at the tender age of 17, but says five years boarding at Lindisfarne College had “made him grow up pretty fast”.

After one season at Sydenham, Godwin is now his second season with University, but missed most of last season with a knee injury. He credits a vast amount of off-season work on skills, fitness and diet with the Canterbury rugby academy and University for his current eye-catching form.

Godwin was also part of the wider training squad for the New Zealand Under-20 side, and while he did not make the final cut, his club is now reaping the rewards.

Godwin says he has never captained a team until University coach Sid Tauamiti last year made him the skipper of the Canterbury under-19 side. “I am probably the youngest captain in Division One, but it’s nice to get that vote of confidence from the coach.”

Hawkins Medal leading standings: Sam Godwin (University) 7, Jason Merrett (Christchurch), Rowan O'Gorman (Marist Albion), Amanaki Nicole (Sumner), Tulolo Tulolo (New Brighton), Stefan Moir (New Brighton) 6
