Halswell/Wigram Now With Eight Junior Teams
Halswell/Wigram is not only the newest club in Canterbury but it is probably the fastest growing. This season it will field eight teams in five grades in the Metro Junior competitions. This is up on the six teams that it fielded last season and the two teams that represented it in its first season.
This year the club will field one under-10 team, one under-nine team and two teams in the under-eight, seven and six competitions. "The local community has got right behind us and it has made running the club much easier," club chairman Craig Sullivan says. "Our sponsors have ensured, for example, that the boys all have jackets."
Craig says that the club has expanded because of the demand for rugby in south-east Christchurch. "It is likely that when Suburbs return to the area in the next few year that we will incorporate with them. Yet there is no doubt that until that occurs the number of teams that we are fielding will increase."
Craig also says that word of mouth and players moving through the age-groups are major reasons why the club continues to grow. He also pays tribute to Canterbury rugby for the assistance they have given the club in growing so quickly.
