Canterbury to Compete in Southern Region Sevens

Lucy RyanThe Canterbury Men’s and Women’s Sevens teams will look to earn their spot in the National Sevens when they take part in the Southern Region qualifying tournament today in Timaru.

The Canterbury Men’s team will play Tasman, Mid-Canterbury, South Canterbury, Otago and Southland, and are looking to defend their title from last year.  The Canterbury Women will want to take it one step further after being beaten by Otago in the final in 2014. They play Tasman, South Canterbury and Otago.

Tournament Dates

Southern Region, Saturday 28 November, Alpine Energy Stadium, Timaru. Host Union: South Canterbury RFU.

Central Region, Saturday 12 December, Playford Park, Levin. Host Union: Horowhenua Kapiti RFU.

Northern Region, Sunday 13 December, Memorial Park, Cambridge. Host Union: Waikato RU.

Bayley’s National Sevens, Saturday 16 & Sunday 17 January, Rotorua International Stadium, Rotorua. Host Union: Bay of Plenty RFU.

Qualification Process

Teams will qualify based on their finishing order at their regional tournament as follows:

Southern region – top five men and top three women;

Central region – top five men and top three women; and

Northern region – top six men (incl National Host Union BOPRFU) and top four women.
